The Four Parts of Medicare
Medicare is divided into four parts, each covering different services. Understanding what each part covers is the first step to making an informed decision.
Part A: Hospital Insurance
Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.
Part B: Medical Insurance
Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. The standard Part B premium for 2026 is deducted from your Social Security check each month.
Part C: Medicare Advantage
An alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies. Medicare Advantage plans bundle Parts A and B, and usually include Part D (prescription drugs) and extra benefits like dental and vision.
Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage
Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. Part D plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. If you don't enroll when first eligible, you may pay a late enrollment penalty.
